Performance and engagement
This section of the checklist is used to identify how well the employee is performing their tasks or functions at work and to also assess how engaged they are.
A high performing and engaged employee will show full commitment to their role on a frequent basis and this will be noticed by other colleagues and customers. In this section, we want to know, are they exceeding expectations on a frequent basis and are other members of the team or customers noticing their exceptional efforts whilst at work?
Leadership qualities
If an employee is ready to move up to the next position in their career, it’s crucial that they possess strong leadership qualities. This is because you’ll need to trust and rely on this employee the more senior they become.
They don’t necessarily have to show that they can manage a team but they need to demonstrate that they can use their own initiative when left alone. They should be comfortable and confident in their own decision-making capabilities and should be able to handle high-pressure situations or conflict in a mature way.
Attitude
What good is it to promote a high performing employee at work if their attitude stinks? A well-rounded, high performing team member should be fantastic at their job but they should also be a joy to work with.
They should strive to be positive and solutions-focused rather than constantly acting in a negative manner and pointing out problems with no answers. You want to promote someone who finds their way out of a bad situation and brings others along with them, rather than moaning about the circumstance they are in and doing nothing about it.
This section will ask questions to gauge an employees mood on a frequent basis and how they interact with other members of the team whilst at work.
Skills and expertise
One of the most important reasons to promote an employee is because they are showing an advanced skill set which has made them exceptionally better at their job.
They should be outperforming other colleagues at their level and are therefore ready to move into the next phase of their career. You’ll want to find out if they are doing all the training necessary to learn the skills they need and whether they can confidently share their advanced knowledge with fellow colleagues.
Communication skills
Bad communication skills in the workplace can be disastrous for business operations. If you want to promote an employee you’ll need to be confident that they can consistently communicate well. They should be comfortable expressing ideas and opinions in order to improve processes or procedures and they should be friendly and warm when communicating with their colleagues.
A great communicator should have the ability to listen just as well as they talk. They should take ideas and opinions on board to improve their performance and they should always stay open-minded.
